Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy from Benji Physio
One of the best solutions to treat tendon, joint and bone pain
What is Extracorporeal shockwave (“ESWT”) therapy?
Extracorporeal shockwave (“ESWT”) is a non-invasive, safe, and proven treatment method to help patients with chronic tendon injury or pain (also known as tendinopathy) and bone injury (malunion, stress fracture, Severs’ and Osgood Schlatter’s disease). Recent studies have also shown that ESWT can decrease pain and improve function in patients suffering from osteoarthritis.
Shockwave Therapy has been shown to
1. reduce inflammation,
2. decrease pain, and
3. promote the regeneration of healthy tissues by producing new small arteries (angiogenesis) and stimulating the production of collagen through the proliferation of fibroblasts within the damaged tissues.
What conditions can Shockwarwe Therapy be used to treat?
ESWT is first well-known for its effect on tendinopathies.
Achilles tendon
Patellar tendon
Tennis elbow
Golfer’s elbow
Greater trochanter pain syndrome (also known as gluts tendinopathy)
Proximal hamstrings tendon
Plantar Fascia
It can also help bone healing following fracture and growing pain.
Bone stress fractures
Non-union fractures
Sever’s Disease
Osgood-Sclaterr’s disease
Recent studies have shown great results with other conditions.
Frozen shoulder
Morton’s neuroma
Osteoarthritis
How does it work?
A metal projectile is fired within a guiding tube that strikes a metal applicator placed on the skin. The projectile generates stress waves in the applicator that transmit pressure waves into tissue. As this pressure decreases, a negative pressure called tensile phase is formed. It is during this tensile phase that cavitation is formed. Both the compression phase and the cavitation phase seem to have important therapeutic effects.
Our device : The EMS Dolorclast
We decided to use the new EMS Dolorclast radial shockwave device at the clinic. As we know that both the compression phase and the cavitation phase have an important therapeutic effect, it made sense to choose this device which has been shown to have the best cavitation effect on tissues and also the best energy output on the market. Only the best for our patients!

The treatment process from Benji Physio
The assessment
During your first session, we will run a full physio assessment and discuss with you if EWST is a good option for your injury/pain.
The baseline
Establishing a baseline will help us quantify your pain and muscle/tendon weakness before your first ESWT session.
We will compare pre and post-treatment measurements once your ESWT treatment is complete.
The shockwave therapy
We recommend 3 sessions with a one-week interval between each session. Some conditions might need more sessions.
An ESWT session lasts around 15 minutes. Depending on your condition, you might only need EWST or it may form part of a “normal” physio session.
The rehabilitation
EWST on its own works well but optimal outcomes are found when the right physio protocol is in place. For optimal benefits, you will need to strengthen the affected area and most probably the adjacent joints and muscles as well. Further physio sessions will be organised to make sure you recover as well as you should.
Potential Side-effects
When performed properly, RSWT with the Swiss DolorClast® has only minimal risks.
Typical device-related non-serious adverse events are:
Pain and discomfort during and after treatment (anaesthesia is not necessary)
Reddening of the skin
Petechia
Swelling and numbness of the skin over the treatment area
These adverse events usually disappear within 36 hours of treatment.
Shockwave treatment therapy from Benji Physio can help with the below conditions.
Plantar Fasciitis Therapy
Achilles Tendinopathy Therapy
Golfers Elbow Therapy
Tennis Elbow Therapy
Shockwave therapy pricing
One session - £80
Three sessions - £220
EWST session + physio session (30 min in total) - £100
Please note that you will need a physiotherapy assessment prior to your ESWT treatment to confirm that ESWT is a good option for your condition
