Did you recently undergo an operation? Not sure where to go from here?

An operation is generally very traumatic for the body.

And patients are often left with little guidance on what to do next.

Not knowing when you can start putting more weight on that leg or whether removing a shoulder sling for a few hours during the day is possible can be very stressful…

Knowing what is safe to do or not is key to a successful recovery. That’s why we always start our treatments with a precise assessment of the area that has been operated on.

This will help us determine at what stage of recovery you are at and establish what rehabilitation programme is required.

Seeing a physiotherapist after an operation is also a must to avoid complications. Patients can, for example, develop a frozen shoulder for staying too immobile after a wrist operation..

Our Recovery Protocol

Stage 1

During the first days and weeks following your operation, we will first focus on calming the pain, reducing the inflammation and bruising. We will also work on getting you as much mobility as possible to make your life easier.

At this point during your post-op rehab process, your body needs rest to get over the trauma. This is an important step to recovery and the sooner you can be seen by a physiotherapist, the better!

Stage 2

We have the choice of several treatments to help you feel better after an operation, e.g.:

• Massage

• Acupuncture

• Taping

• Electrotherapy

• Joint mobilisations

Advice on what to do at home and possible equipment required to facilitate your recovery.

Stage 3

Next step is to get you back to strength. This means that as soon as your injured muscle, tendon, ligament or joint can start to move, we will encourage it to move.

Doing this as soon as possible and in the right way will help you heal faster. This will also help avoid compensations which could cause issues later on.

Your rehabilitation will be done in our dedicated rehab gym at the clinic but you will also be encouraged to do exercises at home or our in our gym.

Benji Physio - Post operation treatment and advice
It’s very important to work with people who understand what you went through. Do too much too soon, and you will risk to increase the pain for no good reason. Do too little, you will lengthen your recovery. Having the correct loading strategy at the right time is crucial to your recovery.
