What is an internal vaginal assessment and what should I expect?

If a vaginal examination is indicated from your assessment the physiotherapist will give you full explanation at your appointment and it can be declined.

A vaginal examination is similar to a smear test but without a speculum. The physiotherapist will use a gloved finger to gently examine your vagina and we do our utmost to ensure you maintain your dignity as much as possible throughout the examination. You can also withdraw your consent at any time during the examination. 

The importance of a pelvic floor assessment is to allow us to assess pelvic floor muscle function and strength, technique of pelvic floor muscle contraction, prolapse and any areas of scar tissue/pain. This allows us to start you with appropriate pelvic floor rehabilitation.
