What is Antenatal Physiotherapy?
During pregnancy and after delivery a women’s body undergoes a huge amount of physical and hormonal changes.
This can cause aches and pains such as back pain, hip pain, pelvic girdle pain and rib pain, as well as bladder, bowel and pelvic floor dysfunction which can affect daily functioning. Physiotherapy during pregnancy can help to relieve this discomfort, prepare you for delivery and keep you active throughout your pregnancy.
What to expect from an ante-natal session with our WH physio:
- Detailed history/subjective assessment
- Assessment of back and hip joints
- Movement assessment
- External vaginal assessment of pelvic floor function (occasionally during pregnancy we may do an internal vaginal examination but only if it is indicated)
- Advice on how to exercise safely
- Advice on managing Diastasis Recti (tummy separation)
- Advice on labour
- Discuss any concerns you may have
Treatment will focus as needed on treating pain, dysfunction or weakness using some of the following modalities:
- Massage, joint mobilisations, acupuncture
- Electrotherapy
- Taping
- Specific pelvic muscle strengthening exercise
- Advice regarding splints and supports
We will also provide you with a specific exercise programme to address the present issues and help you stay strong/continuing to exercise throughout your pregnancy.
How can a Women’s Health Physio help during your pregnancy?
During your first appointment, the assessment will be tailored to your needs and concerns. This may involve an internal vaginal examination (to assess pelvic floor muscle function and strength, technique of pelvic floor muscle contraction, prolapse, and any areas of scar tissue/pain). This will be fully explained at your appointment and it can be declined.
At the end of the assessment your physiotherapist will explain your condition and discuss management/treatment options.
